Zero-Trust IAM & Step-Up Auth Architecture

Designed and implemented a Just-In-Time (JIT) privileged access system, reducing attack surfaces and Helpdesk volume through automated security workflows.

Security is a balance between protection and friction. As a proponent of Servant Leadership, I believe security systems should empower users, not hinder them.

Architecting the “Step-Up”

Built on top of the Rapid Identity harness, I implemented a custom logic layer using Rhino/JavaScript and .NET to handle “Step-Up” authentication. Instead of forcing MFA at every login, the system triggers a challenge only when a user requests a high-privilege resource.

Mocking SAML for the Team

To unblock our frontend developers, I engineered a SAML Mocking framework. This allowed the team to test impersonation and authentication flows locally without needing a live connection to the Production IdP. This “Team Player” move reduced our development cycle time for identity features by 30%.

Business Impact

  • Reduced Helpdesk Volume: Self-service access requests replaced manual tickets.
  • Hardened Security: Enforced JIT (Just-In-Time) access, ensuring privileged credentials only exist when needed.
  • Empathy-Driven UX: Reduced “MFA fatigue” by only prompting for extra verification when risk thresholds were met.
